Cliffs Of MoherThe power of words

In gearing up for the upcoming 8 weeks of searching for new artists and placing orders to arrive for the holiday season I did a little analysis of my top 10 artists.  What is their work like?  What are their price points?  What do they have in common? Answer: Although the medium might be different for each, 9 out of my top 10 artists express themselves through words.

Whether the words are short and sassy such as Joanne Sharpe's best selling sign "Just put on your big girl panties and deal with it," or they inspire us like Gandhi's most famous quote "Be the change you wish to see in the world," or cause us to ponder our lives such as Einstein's "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle," words help us to connect to ourselves and to everyone around us.

"Kind words can be short and easy to speak but their echoes are endless."
Mother Theresa

At the end of the day on Wednesday two ladies came into the store and were having a grand old time looking around, enjoying all the wonderful things they could read.  One of the ladies came near the front counter and was trying on some rings.  I heard her sigh and say "Ugh, I have such fat sausage fingers - these rings are so pretty they just don't look as nice on me."  In my head the first thing that came to my mind was "you, and your fingers, are perfect just the way they are" - and out it came from my mouth.  She turned around and looked at me and I saw that her whole demeanor changed, her face lit up and she said "Thank you, that was a really nice thing to say."  I knew that I had brought a little sunshine to her day - and that made my day all the more perfect!

Needless to say, the relationship between my artist sales analysis early in the day and the impact of my words later in the day did not escape me.  Words are powerful and help make up the heart and soul of La Muse.  My customers LOVE words and so do I.

You can bet that in the coming weeks my focus will be to bring in more artists for the holiday season that speak to you and help speak for you.  What do you think:  La Muse ... The Gift of Words  Has a catchy ring?  :)

PS - If you know of a wonderful artist that expresses him or herself through words please tell me about them!

What's new:

 storypeople

StoryPeople - A few months back I told you how excited I was to be able to bring Brian Andreas and StoryPeople into La Muse.  At the time I directed you directly to their website because, although I had a full stock of prints in the store, I wasn't able to offer them online due to contractual constraints.  All that has changed!  Two weeks ago I spent about 8 hours going through my StoryPeople prints and categorizing them into various themes such as romantic love, children, parents, etc. - something their website doesn't offer.  I thought this would be especially helpful to those of you who are new to the work and wanted a little 'direction.'  Please take a moment to peruse our selection of StoryPeople  prints.  We also carry Brian's books, cards and sculptures which I have yet to get on to the website but can tell you all about if you contact the store.

A fun gift under $20.00 - Shira Wall's (Parksville, British Columbia) steel fridge magnets are substantial in size, message and character.

Worth Sharing

Every once in a while I run into an artist whose work I enjoy but doesn't meet the parameters that I've set to bring into the store.  One of these artists is Tammy Torres of HeavenlyArtInc.com .  She sent me samples of her work and it is striking, not to mention that Tammy is a delight to communicate with.  You can bet that the day "La Muse for Children" opens Tammy's work will be among the first to grace our walls!

Your Opinion Counts

Have you heard of Mary Phillips Designs? It is a collection of fun and sassy stationery, apparel, mugs, etc.  Mary's work definitely fits into the humorous catagory and I always find myself smiling while perusing it.  I have an opportunity to bring Mary's gifts into La Muse but, even though her company is a young 8 years old, she's grown by leaps and bounds.  Good for her!  Hmmmm, I wonder ... has her popularity gotten too big (read too 'commercial') for La Muse?  Please feel free to drop me an email as to whether or not you think Mary's designs would be a good addition to La Muse.  Your opinion is appreciated.
