Don't
Forget Yourself
...a story from
"Practice Random Acts of Kindness."
from the editors of Random Acts of
Kindness
"I went back to Vietnam last year. I'm not
really sure why I went - it just seemed
terribly important that I go. When I think
about it now, I think I went back to try to
find something that I had lost there
twenty-three years ago. It was a very
strange trip, very disorienting. So much
had changed and so much was exactly as it
had been. I was there for five days, and
most of the time I just wandered around in a
fog to places I had spent time, places I had
fought. On the last day, I was taking a cab
to the airport, and the taxi driver started
talking to me. He obviously knew I was an
American, and he asked me if I had fought in
Vietnam. When I said yes, I was almost
overcome with grief and shame. As I handed
him his money at the airport, he held onto
my hand for a moment and said, 'I was your
enemy, but now I am your friend.'
"On the flight back, I felt more alive than
I had in years. If that cab driver in Ho
Chi Minh City could hold my hand as a
friend, then maybe I could be my friend as
well."

"Because we are human, we will all stumble and fall,
be selfish and petty, speak sharply, and do what feels
like the inexcusable thing. And because we are human,
we all need and deserve compassion in order to grow
and blossom. Of course it is wonderful when we
receive such life-enhancing gifts from someone else,
but we need to remember also to offer these qualities
to ourselves. We deserve our own love just as much as
anyone else does.
When it comes to cultivating love, kindness, and
compassion, don't forget yourself!"
-The editors of 'Random Acts of Kindness'
Those that receive my
newsletter regularly know that most months I
begin it with a story of my own. Over the last few
weeks I've chosen various quotes from this book to
use on my outdoor sign. So, this month I decided to
open the book to a random page and tell the story on
that page. I have faith that it's just the story at
least one of my subscribers needs to hear. :)
